This SMOBOT kit is designed for the Medium, Large, XL & 2XL Big Green Egg. If you have the single disk style cap (see picture in gallery) you will need the version that includes our custom 5.5" aluminum cap. If you have a classic daisy wheel, then SMOBOT can attach directly to your existing cap OR you can use our custom 5.5" cap and available rain hat.
SMOBOT is a patented robotic damper system that attaches to the top vent of most Kamado style smokers like those from Big Green Egg, Kamado Joe, and Primo Ceramic Grills. SMOBOT monitors the temperature inside the smoker using a high temperature thermocouple. When the temperature varies from the target you set, the controller tells the damper how much to open and close to maintain the temperature you choose. Think of SMOBOT as your smoker robot.
Airflow is controlled by the natural draw through the top damper, which makes installation easy and power consumption low. The damper replaces the manual factory daisy wheel, attaching to the top vent cap with the single existing screw in a matter of seconds. Your smoker works just the way it was designed. Because SMOBOT only moves the damper when necessary, power consumption is low. SMOBOT is powered through its micro-USB connector. If desired, powering it from a low-cost USB battery pack is a great option when an outlet isn't available.
The purchase of a SMOBOT Grill Controller comes with everything you need to control your grill and monitor your cook including:
1 X Controller
1 X Robotic Damper
1 X Grill Thermometer
2 X Food Probe
1 X USB Power Supply and Cable
NOTE: SMOBOT like many internet connected devices requires 2.4ghz WiFi to work properly.l
Frequently Asked Questions
What grills can SMOBOT be used with?
SMOBOT can be used with most grills that have a top and bottom damper for airflow—as long as an attachment means is available. We have tested it on the following grills:
- Big Green Egg: S / M / L / XL and MiniMax
- Kamado Joe: Classic, Big Joe, Junior
- Primo Grills: All Models
- Grill Dome: Infinity XL (probably others, but not yet verified)
- Saffire L, XL
- Monolith
- The Bastard
- Royal Kamado
- Chargriller Akorn Kamado
- Newly Supported! Vision Grills Ceramic Kamado
- Newly Supported! Pit Boss Kamado & Ceramic Grills
- COMING LATER THIS YEAR: Weber Summit Charcoal, Kettle, Smokey Mountain
If you have a grill that is not listed above, please contact us to see if the SMOBOT might work with your grill too!
Can SMOBOT run on batteries?
SMOBOT runs on 5V DC power with a standard micro-USB socket. We provide a micro-USB wall plug, but you can also use any standard rechargeable 5V USB power pack, readily available on Amazon.
SMOBOT will run for at least 10 hours for every 1,000 mah (milliamp-hours) of capacity your battery has. For example, a common 2,200 mah battery bank will run SMOBOT for more than 20 hours on a single charge!
One huge benefit of SMOBOT is that it is a low-power grill controller, unlike blower-based controllers, making it ideal for running on batteries and getting rid of unnecessary extension cords and wires around your grill.
Perhaps even more important: If SMOBOT has had your pit on target and there is a power loss, your cook should just keep on going reasonably well. If you were controlling with a blower-based grill controller, power loss would spell disaster.
Is the SMOBOT waterproof?
The SMOBOT damper can be exposed to water and can be used in the rain, but we suggest using a plastic bag or container to protect the SMOBOT control unit from the elements if you are using it in inclement weather.
Does the damper hardware need to be cleaned frequently?
The damper will get some residue buildup over time, this is normal. Your damper might even appear to seize up after it has cooled. It is not necessary to clean the damper after every use, just gently lift up on the damper arm to free it and verify movement. The SMOBOT designers have used their dampers for hundreds of hours and have never cleaned them, we simply use this process to free the arm and allow movement. The following video demonstrates the process.
Do I need to use the cloud service to use my SMOBOT?
The cloud service “mySMOBOT” allows you to monitor your SMOBOT from outside of your home network, but you do not need to attach your SMOBOT to your home network or use the cloud service in order to control your grill or monitor your SMOBOT. If you do not want to use the cloud or connect to your home network, you can put the SMOBOT in Access Point mode (default) and connect to it via a browser for remote monitoring. Please note, while in Access Point mode, power consumption is significantly higher.
